Partnering for Success

In partnership the IAM and AFT Unions have come together to ensure healthcare workers have a say on the job. We understand how long you’ve been underpaid and overworked and we know the time for change is now. A Union contract allows you to have a say in the workplace on things like staffing, pay and benefits as well as a grievance procedure so when the company does something wrong on their end it isn’t just swept under the rug.

Our nation’s healthcare facilities were dangerously understaffed prior to the pandemic. And for nearly three years, health professionals have worked through unprecedented challenges. This has compounded the strain on an already exhausted workforce, leaving most emotionally drained and far too many in mental health distress. Today’s staffing crisis is really a shortage of staff willing to endure the current working conditions, and it’s a crisis of the healthcare industries’ own making.  As a result, frontline healthcare workers have been leaving and are continuing to leave the health professions in record numbers.

In response, delegates to the American Federation of Teachers’ biennial national convention in July 2022 passed a pointed resolution,Addressing Staffing Shortages in the Healthcare Workforce.” This resolution called for the convening of a national task force composed of local leaders and frontline members, and that task force produced the Healthcare Staffing Shortage Task Force Report

While the consequences of the chronic understaffing of our nation’s healthcare facilities can be deadly, the problem is solvable. Our nation’s healthcare employers must invest in the workforce, improve the working conditions, make healthcare facilities a safe place to work, and engage frontline workers in collaborative decision-making. Prioritizing patients over maximizing revenue means recruiting and retaining the workforce needed to deliver high-quality care.

Why a Union

Better Wages & Benefits

Union members earn roughly $200 more every week than non-members. They are also have better health and retirement benefits.  But it’s more than that. It’s about negotiating with your bosses over those benefits, as well as set wage increases that can’t change at management’s whim.

Respect on the Job

A union contract puts rules in place that allow you to do your job without fear of unjust treatment. If you feel those rules are broken, you have the legal right to appeal through a grievance procedure. Everyone is treated with respect.

Consistent Workplace Policies

We are often at the mercy of our managers when it comes to scheduling, which generally means long and inconsistent hours. As union members, you will have a say in notice and scheduling to adequately plan for your work and family responsibilities.

New Report Details Harm Caused to Healthcare Industry by Apollo Global Management

A new report from the Private Equity Stakeholder Project (PESP) reveals how private equity firm Apollo Global Management’s ownership of two major American hospital systems degrades services, hurts workers and puts patients at grave risk.

The comprehensive study, Apollo’s Stranglehold on Hospitals Harms Patients and Healthcare Workers,” produced in conjunction with the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), shows that since acquiring Lifepoint Health in 2018 and spinning off ScionHealth in 2021, Apollo has consolidated ownership of 220 hospitals in 36 states, with a workforce of approximately 75,000 employees. The hospitals have experienced cuts to services, layoffs, poor quality ratings, and regulatory investigations.
